Week 6 - Steph's Style Challenge
Welcome to Week Six of Steph's Style Challenge!
Our style challenge this week is to get dressed using the Rule of Thirds! The Rule of Thirds comes from the world of design and art and, it basically means that a piece of art, photograph, etc... is more visually appealing and compelling if the focus is placed on an imaginary 1/3 section of the design or photograph.
How does that relate to getting dressed? Well, the human eye is drawn to objects that use the Rule of Thirds so if you break up your outfit using the ration of 2:1 or 1:1:1, the human eye is going to be drawn towards it more than an outfit that uses the ration of 1:1. So when you get dressed, break up your outfit into 1/3 and 2/3 instead of 1/2 and 1/2. It's all about balance and it's how you balance your outfit, not your body!
Let's look at two screenshots from the challenge video!
In this first photo, I"m wearing a longer tank top and it's dividing my outfit into 1/2 and 1/2.
In this second photo, I've French tucked the tank top so my outfit is closer to the ration of 1/3 and 2/3. And it's visually more appealing.
Let's look at more photos.
In the photo above, look how much better the outfit looks when I knotted the top so that the maxi skirt became 2/3 of the outfit instead of only 1/2.
And in this outfit, I'm wearing a black sweater that I've pulled down over my hips. It looks okay. BUT, look what happens when I pull the sweater up just a bit and add knee-high boots! It just looks more put together!
So how do we do this with an extra layer? Let's go back to the photo at the top of this post because it's working overtime to create a great outfit!
This outfit works well for two reasons! Do you see it?! Yes, it's broken up into thirds with the French tucked top and the longer kimono, but outfits with a French tuck and a longer open layer work doubly well! And here's why! There's TWO rules of thirds working in this outfit.
The first is the top 1/3 of the top and the bottom 2/3 of the jeans. And the second is the top 2/3 of the kimono and the bottom 1/3 of the jeans!
